population of the province is 89,300. How do I get to Bocas del Toro?Aeroperlas
and Mapiex Aero serve the islands with flights from/to Panama City, David and
Changuinola. Fare from Panama City to Bocas is about $ 150.00 round
trip. Note: These
airlines have a strict weight limit and charge for overage – check with them
before packing so you are not unpleasantly surprised. Or you can drive from Panama City (about 8 hours) or Limon Costa Rica (about 4 Hours) to Almirante and from there take a water taxi to Bocas del Toro. Take the Interamerican Highway to Almirante, where you can leave the car in a parking lot. Roads are paved, in good condition. Beautiful views in the mountains. A major section of the coast road was completed in 2000, sparking rapid development on the islands. How do I Provision for my charter?Bocas Del Toro has ample food shopping. The meats available are fine. Seafood is a particularly good buy and there's plenty of fresh seasonal fruits. You'll have problems carrying fresh foods through customs when you fly in, but you could choose to buy some provisions in Panama City or other larger towns when you arrive. Remember weight limits that might apply if you're flying into Bocas, however. What do I need to Bring?Bring your favorite leisure-time things like books and games. However, there's little advantage to chancing it with bottled water readily available in Bocas Town when you provision. The 90 gallon water tank on the boat will be filled with Bocas Town water and it is safe for washing dishes, showering, etc. We recommend you buy bottled water for drinking. Certainly, traveling smartly is always good practice, but you'll find the people of Bocas friendly and eager to lend assistance in a manner that is sure to keep you at ease. Is it Buggy in Boca Del Toro?When you're out in remote areas, gnats and Mosquitos can be a problem particularly at sunrise and sunset. Anchor further off-shore to minimize hassles. Is Health Care available in Bocas?There is a hospital and drug-store in Bocas Town. Panama City is a 45 minute flight away and has excellent health facilities in the unlikely event you find yourself in a medical emergency. Do I need to Speak Spanish to come to Bocas?A simple Spanish phrase book could be helpful when getting around Panama City, but once you've arrived in Bocas, speaking English will work just fine for you. Bocas is historically an English Speaking area because the original schools were established around 1900 by the United Fruit Company. The schools continue to emphasize learning English.
